Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
Each year, RCNR sponsors several high-school juniors, who have demonstrated leadership potential, to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference in Brown Summit, NC. The Conference is an effective training program for young leaders and emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. Candidates are selected with the help of guidance counselors and teachers at their respective high schools.
Communities in Schools Rotary Academy
Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest stay-in school network, serving just over one million youth in 154 communities across the United States. CIS provides the link between teachers and the community – by bringing caring adults into the schools and community sites to meet children’s needs and ensure that youth stay in school, learn needed skills and are prepared to enter the world of work or post- secondary education upon graduation.
The CIS-Rotary Academy was established in 1994 at Daniels Middle School in Raleigh. Former club member Sherry Lee planted the seed with the North Raleigh Rotary Club, and with the assistance of Past-President Ed Smallwood, successfully recruited the participation of four other Rotary Clubs in Wake County. The five Rotary Clubs that founded the Academy were Capital City, Cary Central, Crabtree, Raleigh, and RCNR.
Rotarians contribute to the academy financially but also in other ways, including classroom presentations on career opportunities, academic tutoring, and one-on-one mentoring. Club members are matched with Academy students based on similar interests, and together they focus on improving basic academic skills and exploring careers of interest to the student. The six major objectives of the Rotary Academy are: (1) to improve school attendance; (2) to reduce the number of school dropouts; (3) to enhance personal, educational, and social development; (4) to develop successful employment attitudes and skills; (5) to increase parental involvement; and (6) to reinforce positive social behavior.
Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina

For over 10 years our club has supported the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina. The mission of the facility is to provide residential and foster care/adoption programs for neglected, abused, and hurting children that emphasize academic and Christian education to address their physical, emotional and spiritual needs in a homelike setting. Vice President Erik Grunwald (standing) and Rotarian Armand Occhetti delivered a truck load of give-a-ways for the Home's Thrift Shop.
